Mother’s Day is one of those holidays that tends to sneak up on me each May. The weather is getting warmer, and it’s all about me and what I’m going to do each weekend.
So if you’re anything like me, and need a little Mother’s Day inspiration, check out my list of Mother’s Day activities below. And remember… you’re never too old to take Mom out for the day!
Mother’s Day in the Garden
If your mom is into plants, flowers, and balmy temperatures, then the Botanical Conservatory is the perfect place to take her for Mother’s Day. Visit their Butterflies of Malaysia exhibit, and pot your own special Mother’s Day plant for her to take with her.
Sunday, May 13, 2012 12pm – 4pm
Adults – $5.00, Children (3-17) – $3.00, Age 2 and under – Free
Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, 1100 South Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne
Laboring for Mothers
Moms of all kind need our support and encouragement. Laboring for Mothers is a week-long effort for individuals and area businesses to use their resources (time, money, vehicles, tools) to help out mothers, single moms, foster moms, grandmothers, etc. with their day-to-day chores. It could be as simple as helping them with laundry, or going to the grocery store for them!
There will be a commencement and dinner celebration on the 13th with guest speakers, entertainment, dinner, and dessert!
Sunday, May 13, 2012 4pm – 8pm
Downtown Fort Wayne Community Center, 233 West Main Street, Fort Wayne
Menu: chicken, ham, cornbread dressing, baked mac and cheese, rice, green beans, potato salad, rolls, peach cobbler, cheesecake, and cake
Mother’s Day Plant Sale
If Mom’s the gardening type, take her over to the McMillen Ice Arena all Mother’s Day weekend to pick out some new plants. They’re offering over 600 types of plants, including herbs, tomatoes, vegetable plants, annual and perennial flowers, foliage plants, tropical plants, and more! If you visit on Saturday, you’ll be able to take advantage of the special guest speakers and DIY displays to help out those moms who lack the green thumb. Best of all, proceeds benefit public programs at the Botanical Conservatory.
Friday, May 11, 2012 4pm – 7pm
Saturday, May 12, 2012 10am – 5pm
Sunday, May 13, 2012 12pm – 4pm
McMillen Ice Arena, 3900 Abbott Street, Fort Wayne
Jefferson Pointe Mother’s Day Brunch
If your mom loves to shop, then it’s very likely she has $100 in receipts from Jefferson Pointe from the month of April laying around somewhere. That’s all you need to earn yourself 2 free tickets to their Mother’s Day brunch. This light brunch will take place outside by the fountain (weather permitting), and will include a fashion show and prizes.
Saturday, May 12, 2012 11am – 1pm (note: this event is not actually on Mother’s Day)
Get your 2 free Tickets at the Mall Office by Panera Bread
Jefferson Pointe Mall, 4110 West Jefferson Boulevard, Fort Wayne
Sleep with the Sharks
While it’s not exactly being touted as a Mother’s Day event, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo “Sleep with the Sharks” would be perfect for a young family, looking for a new and adventurous way to spend their Mother’s Day. This overnight experience gives kids over the age of 5 and their accompanying adult a chance to see how the Zoo operates after dark, and spend the night underneath the shark tank.
Saturday, May 12, 2012 6pm – 9am
Children – $28, Adults – $18, Register Here
Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, 3411 Sherman Boulevard, Fort Wayne
With all of these options, and a little over a week until Mother’s Day… there should be no excuses this year. Go out and wow your mom!
How will you be celebrating Mom this year?
